Celebrating the life of
Bruce Robert Barstow
June 15, 1931 - May 24, 2015
Bruce Robert Barstow, of Savannah, GA, and Durham, NH, died at home on May 24, 2015. He was born on June 15, 1931 in Philadelphia to William and Phyllis (Snape) Barstow. He graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1949 and from Lehigh University in 1953. As an ROTC student at Lehigh, he became an officer in the U.S. Air Force and served in an intelligence capacity in Korea.
After receiving his honorable discharge from the service, Bruce began a lengthy career with the Aluminum Company of America, during which he served in various sales, marketing, and management capacities. His assignments included nine years in the New York sales office; Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Europe, Africa and the Middle East for Alcoa International, based in Lausanne, Switzerland; corporate VP of Sales and Marketing; and President of Grupo Aluminio in Mexico.
He married Diantha (Dee) Lamb on February 2, 1957, and they had three sons. Despite being busy with Alcoa, Bruce always found time for family activities. He was President of the Dad’s Club in Chappaqua, NY, and chief of an Indian Guide tribe in Pittsburgh, where he also served as President of the South Hills YMCA. While living in Europe, the family spent most weekends hiking, skiing, or boating on Lake Geneva.
Bruce retired from Alcoa in 1991, and he and Dee moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island, where he enjoyed golf, tennis and bocce. He was a member of The Landings Club, Rotary, and the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, which he served as a Trustee and as Chairman of the Administrative Board. From a second home in New Hampshire, Bruce continued his involvement in business by becoming a full-time consultant to Favorite Foods, Inc., a Portsmouth, NH, company founded by his sons Jeff and Chris.
He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Bill and Don. He is survived by Dee, his loving wife of 58 years; sons Jeff (Renee) of Barrington, RI; Chris (Petra) of Portsmouth, NH; and Doug (Deb) of Columbus, OH; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Allen (Jo), sister-in-law, Betsy Lamb (Ann), and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on June 13, 2015, at 11:00am at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jim Giddens officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411 or Hospice Savannah, PO Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
